Restrictions on CMRs in textiles
EU Member States vote for reducing the use of hazardous chemicals in garment and footwear
The European Union approved a series of important usage restrictions for 33 substances classified as CMR in textiles, clothing and footwear. CMRs are carcinogenic, mutagenic and toxic substances for reproduction used in production processes or to attribute specific properties to the product, such as to prevent shrinkage or make fabric crease-resistant.
Consumers can be exposed to these hazardous substances through skin contact, inhalation or unintentional ingestion of dust released from the materials. A risk that obviously becomes higher in the case of children's clothing.
CMRs will be included in Annex XVIIof REACH, Appendix 12. The newrestrictions will affect articles marketed in the European Union regardless of where they were produced. Companies have two years to adapt strarting from the publication of the provision on the Official Journal of the European Union.
